Henry Hudson went on four voyages in total in search of the Northwest Passage: 1607, 1608, 1609 and 1610. On his first two voyages, he took a ship called the Hopewell. On his second voyage, he took a ship called Half Moon. Finally on his fourth voyage, he took a ship called Discovery. Henry Hudson discovered many different things. He found Whale Bay which actually started the coal mining industry, and he found a large New York Bay which now is called the Hudson Bay. It is believed that Henry Hudson only brought a compass, telescope, astrolabe and map on all of his voyages . An astrolabe was an important tool that Hudson used. It helped him measure the angle between the Horizon and the North Star to calculate latitude. Henry Hudson lost his compass on his fourth voyage when a huge wave hit the boat. The wave made the boat tilt to one side and the compass fell over the side and plunged into the water. On June 22, 1611, when Henry Hudson came out of his cabin, his crew tied his hands behind his back and set him adrift on a small boat along with his son and seven sick crew members. The crew were tired of getting lost, didn't have the same objective as Hudson to find a passage to China and just wanted to go home. It is thought that Henry Hudson eventually died of starvation but his body was never found. Only eight crew members returned back to England.
